How to Maintain Your Personal Watercraft
Your personal watercraft or PWC is a fast-moving and fun vehicle that facilitates marine recreation. However, in order for it to stay that way, you have to do your part by keeping your PWC maintained. A well-maintained personal watercraft is less likely to break down in the middle of the water, ruining your ride. Here’s what to do.
Break In Your Engine
While you might be tempted to go full-throttle and ride as fast as possible when you first hop aboard your PWC, don’t! If you take the time to break in the engine, you’ll get a PWC that runs well for a long time. Start by riding at a quarter of the full speed for a half-hour, then move up to half-speed for the same amount of time before you move to three-quarters speed for an hour. After this, you should be good to go at full speed.
Flush Your PWC
After you ride your personal watercraft, it’s a good idea to flush out the engine. This is particularly important if you’re riding in saltwater, which can cause corrosion, or in sandy environments. Hook up your watercraft to a freshwater source, such as a garden hose, and start it up. Engage the throttle as water runs through the engine to allow everything to flush out.
Clean & Wax
Keeping your PWC clean with regular rinses and semi-regular washes will help prevent corrosion and build-up. A good coating of wax once the watercraft is clean and dry can protect your PWC from water and sun damage, too.
