Cause of Seasickness
Seasickness results from a malfunction in the vestibular system in your inner ear, which controls your balance. Your brain can’t process the different inputs from your eyes and your inner ear, which results in vertigo, nausea, pale skin, feverishness, and generally not feeling good.
Avoid Alcohol
You already know that drinking too much alcohol can make you feel sick and weak for hours, so it’s best to avoid drinking on a boat or even for a day or two before you plan to be on a boat. Alcohol dehydrates your system and can wreak havoc on your general well-being, so it’s best not to mix drinks and boating if you’re prone to feeling sick.
Try Herbal Remedies
Ginger and peppermint are two long-used herbal remedies that help with the nausea component of seasickness. Sucking on candies in these flavors or drinking an herbal tea can help to assuage your nausea so you can relax.
Focus On the Horizon
If you find that you’re feeling dizzy from the motion of the boat, try to find a fixed point on the horizon and stare at it. This can help your brain to reorient itself so that you don’t feel as lightheaded.
