PWC Shopping Considerations
Looking for some summer thrills on the water? Owning a personal watercraft (PWC) is the best way to get them! PWC have only become more popular since their development during the latter part of the 20th century. However, it’s important to think about how you’re going to store, insure, maintain, accessorize and transport your PWC.
This buyer’s guide from Jet Ski of Miami, your Florida PWC headquarters, will help you determine exactly what you need to take into consideration before purchasing the personal watercraft of your dreams.
Storage
It’s very important to consider where you’re going to stash your PWC when it’s not in use. If you live in an apartment, for example, there probably aren’t a lot of places on the property you can put it, so you’ll need to rent a storage unit and factor in that monthly cost. It’s a good idea to store your PWC indoors when possible and to keep it covered when not in use to protect it from weather, pests and theft.
If you’re fortunate enough to live on a piece of waterfront property, you can install a docking station for your PWC that lets you instantly launch the watercraft whenever you want to ride! This is a significant additional expense, however.
Insurance
In Florida, you’re not legally required to have insurance on your PWC. However, you really should purchase some personal watercraft insurance coverage. If you get in an accident on your PWC, insurance can cover some or all of the medical costs associated with injuries in addition to damage done to your PWC or other watercraft you might hit. Certain policies even cover accidents caused by other insured boat or PWC operators.
Maintenance
Just like any other type of motorized vehicle on land or sea, personal watercraft have to be maintained to serve you well and work as desired. There are a lot of little daily tasks you can perform to keep your PWC in good shape, like rinsing it off after every ride, but you’ll also need to have the PWC professionally inspected once or twice a year by a mechanic who knows how to tune it up properly.
Accessories
PWC can be outfitted with all sorts of aftermarket accessories that will make your rides more enjoyable. Don’t forget about the cost of these if you want them. If you’re buying new, you can also choose from optional features that the manufacturer has to add to your PWC, but this will up the total sticker price.
Transportation
Finally, you’ll need to think about how you’re going to transport your PWC from your storage area or house to the water. Most people purchase a separate boat trailer to load their PWC onto for maximum convenience, and these trailers are designed to roll a little into the water so you can safely launch your ride.
